A 2/9/19 story on Fox News carried the headline “Omar calls for defunding Homeland Security — 1 hour after insisting that TSA workers get backpay“. That of course raises the question of how Omar expected DHS to provide backpay to its TSA employees if it was to be defunded.
“Omar, the first Somali American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, has been the focus point of a disgustingly racist and Islamophobic campaign,” the paper [Liberation, the Newspaper of the Party for Socialism and Liberation] wrote.
“She has spoken out against U.S. support for Israel, against U.S. war on Venezuela, for Muslim civil rights and against abortion bans.”
The newspaper added that the far-left group “militantly and non-violently” defended the area near the main entrance of the event even as “police allowed hostile right-wingers to move out of what had become their ‘zone’ and wade into the crowd of anti-fascists.”
“As CLAF [Community & Labor Against Fascism] activists sang ‘We Shall Not Be Moved,’ an organizer with the Ilhan Omar event came out and thanked the anti-fascist demonstrators for their support,” the Liberation site wrote.Lukas Mikelionis, “Omar’s socialist supporters denounce Seattle-area protesters as ‘fascist’“, Fox News, May 29, 2019
“There are a handful of people that aren’t my cup of tea, but we have to transcend that and we will, and we have been,” said Engel, as first reported by the New York Post.
The admission came when Engel was asked to discuss how his longstanding support for Israel contrasted with newer members of the Democratic majority, like fellow representatives Ilhan Omar (Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.). Both women have made controversial statements about Israel and Jewish Americans that are widely seen as anti-Semitic. Omar in particular, has accused political groups representing the Jewish community of “paying off” elected officials to be pro-Israel.
Engel, who himself is Jewish, was one of the first to denounce Omar’s rhetoric, calling on her to apologize for the “vile anti-Semitic slur.” Although Engel strongly rebuked Omar, he stopped short of removing her from his committee, despite calls from House Republicans to do so.Haris Alic, “House Foreign Affairs Chair: New ‘Ultra-Left’ Democrats ‘Not My Cup of Tea’“, Washington Free Beacon, May 13, 2019
“This is clear to me that she’s very far to the Left; she’s easily the most far-Left member of Congress,” Grove City College Professor Paul Kengor, academic historian and a scholar of Marxist movements and the American Left, and author of Dupes: How America’s Adversaries Have Manipulated Progressives for a Century, told the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT). “We’re seeing that in merely a few months of her being in office.
“To call Angela Davis one of your idols is really shocking; Angela Davis is the best-known female American Communist.”
But that’s what Omar did last week while sobbing at a Capitol Hill rally in her defense. “To one of my idols, Angela Davis, I just… yeah, I just, I, I can’t tell you how enormously inspiring you have been to me throughout my life,” Omar said.John Rossomando, “Most of the left-wing members in the US Congress support dictator Maduro“, The Blitz, May 12, 2019
